Library Track

Library Track welcomes case studies related to Library and archives management with FOSS4G tools.

Description

Libraries are evolving from repositories for printed information to engaged community centers which provide places and services for discovery in science and technical information. This process both responds to but also actively affects how research is conducted in an increasingly data-driven environment. Current library systems allow the customers to search various material in different formats, both digital- or paper-based. Discovery tools support this process, but this is not sufficient, especially when it comes to maps, metadata and language. Open source geospatial software has a great potential for advanced location-enabled library services, but also the expertise of librarians can provide significant benefits to access and preserve the wealth of knowledge, software and data generated by the OSGeo project communities.

This session focuses on the sharing of experience of librarians and GIS experts to encourage collaboration and discussion of new and emerging concepts in the library domain. Attendance is being encouraged by anyone considering using open source and geospatial software in the library domain up from beginners level, to professional use and strategic perspective. The organizing committee is especially keen to receive content which supports new users of geospatial open source solutions and case studies.

The Library track will focus on the functionality of FOSS4G tools as well as their future developments and improvements, specifically in the following areas of interest:

  • Best practice and case studies of 'geospatial' libraries
  • Long term archiving for community-driven software projects
  • Strategies and best practices for the preservation of scientific data - software and journals
  • Metadata: GIS standards and library standards
  • Journal and Data Repositories
  • Persistent Digital Object Identifiers
  • Dealing with audiovisual heritage
  • Dealing with digitalization and georeferencing historical maps
  • The short/long term benefits of open geospatial for libraries
  • Novel user interfaces for querying big geospatial data
  • Open geospatial beyond "GIS" – how to curate the "hive mind" of the OSGeo projects
  • Linked Open Data

Submission

Authors can submit contributions by choosing one of the following options:

  • full papers (up to 12 pages)
  • demos and work in progress papers (up to 4 pages)

Submissions must be written in English and adhere to the template available in ODT format. The papers must be submitted in the same ODT format (no PDF) to allow the proper formatting of the volume. All papers will be submitted online using the Submission Form. Submission closed!

A blind review process will select papers based on their merits in scientific novelty, relation to the state of the art, presentation of the paper and overall quality. Authors will receive feedback and suggestions for improvement to their paper before submission of the final camera ready version of the paper.

Selected papers will be published online in Geomatics Workbooks (ISSN 1591-092X) which is the conference journal of the Laboratory of Geomatics at Politecnico di Milano, Como Campus.
