Open Data Track

Open Data Track welcomes projects and case studies about geospatial open data and FOSS4G tools.

Description

The scope of the Open Data Track is to provide insights on success stories, best practices and guidelines in releasing public geodata, fostering community driven geodata and developing and maintaining products, services and apps based on open geodata. Through the Open Data Track, it is aimed to bring forward and highlight for everyone how the Open Data initiative in geospatial is growing, what advantages, what controversies, what questions it brings forward to the community as well as the public and private sectors.

Many initiatives worldwide are proving that Open Geospatial Data will be a big part of the future. Within this track, it is intented to reveal state-of-the-art practices and case studies intertwining Open Data and Open Source in geospatial. Throught the selected presentations it is aimed to spread knowledge and deeper understanding on the various and significant implications of open geodata and to sketch best practices and guidelines for releasing and using these data within the FOSS4G community and beyond.

The Open Data track will focus on the functionality of FOSS4G tools as well as their future developments and improvements, specifically in the following areas of interest:

  • Open Geodata in the eyes of public administrations
  • Building a bridge between administrations and communities through Open Geodata
  • Open Geodata in the private sector
  • Best practices and guidelines in community driven data
  • Metadata for Open Geodata
  • Open Geodata influences in Science
  • Metrics for evaluating the success of the release of Open Geodata
  • Good practices for increasing the use of Open Data
  • Open Geodata - Quality and Relevance

Submission

Authors can submit contributions by choosing one of the following options:

  • full papers (up to 12 pages)
  • demos and work in progress papers (up to 4 pages)

Submissions must be written in English and adhere to the template available in ODT format. The papers must be submitted in the same ODT format (no PDF) to allow the proper formatting of the volume. All papers will be submitted online using the Submission Form. Submission closed!

A blind review process will select papers based on their merits in scientific novelty, relation to the state of the art, presentation of the paper and overall quality. Authors will receive feedback and suggestions for improvement to their paper before submission of the final camera ready version of the paper.

Selected papers will be published online in Geomatics Workbooks (ISSN 1591-092X) which is the conference journal of the Laboratory of Geomatics at Politecnico di Milano, Como Campus.

  • Submission deadline: March 9, 2015
  • Acceptance notice: April 3, 2015
  • Camera ready version: April 30, 2015
  • Conference: July 13, 2015

Committee

Proposals will be assessed by the Open Data Track Committee and selected on their overall quality (such as originality and clarity) and relevance.
