Location

« Chez Gégène » in Joinville-Le-Pont, the oldest and original « guinguette » place on the banks of river Marne, just outside Paris !

The town of Joinville is particularly known since the nineteenth century for its guinguettes, installed along the Marne. There are testimonies of this time through different paintings or literary works, such as the novel of Emile Zola, Au Bonheur des Dames. Today there are still a few guinguettes, such as Chez Gégène, which come alive during the week-ends of the beautiful season.

A bit of history

Déjeuner de Canotiers, A.Renoir

Before the expansion of Paris in 1860, which swallowed up a number of neighbouring small towns, a large number of taverns were located just beyond the barriers to escape the grant on wines. These are called guinguettes and are located on the banks of Seine and Marne river. This situation was initially due to the tax levied on goods entering the city of Paris. Establishing themselves outside the walls of the city, these establishments were not subject to it. It was towards the end of the eighteenth century that the guinguettes began to distinguish themselves from simple drinking places, offering their activity of relatively cheap balls. They were mostly frequented during the summer, oby families on sundays, workers on mondays and students on thursdays.
